One of our members, Sofi, is a Ukrainian refugee. When the war started, she and her family struggled to find safe accommodations as they fled to unknown countries. Although they had some support, government shelters had limited capacity and lots of individuals refused to house families with children or pets. In the last 24 hours, we built Haven— the mobile platform Sofi and countless others wish they had. Through Haven, we’re connecting refugees with safe temporary housing and resources.

When signing up, refugees and hosts create profiles, inputting their backgrounds and stories. Through Haven’s initial screens (navigable through a bottom navigation bar after authentication), refugees discover nearby accommodations, see listing details, and contact the host to request a stay. At the same time, hosts use these screens to add/modify their listings, chat with refugees seeking to stay with them, and manage stay requests.

We also built a social aspect to Haven — a major issue Sofi and her family faced was a lack of information and communication as they fled. Haven’s leftmost screen on our navigation bar is a “community feed”, where hosts and refugees create and spread posts and announcements about everything from food drives to gas stations.

Through tackling such a close-to-home problem, we embraced ethics in our design and development. Our commitment to safety, transparency, and accessibility revolves around securely collecting data and working to verify identities and accommodations. In our onboarding process, we don’t just collect emails and passwords, but backgrounds and stories. That’s because, at Haven, we connect refugees with more than just a roof — rather, we prioritize building human connections between refugees and kind, committed hosts ensuring that we minimize conflicts and support all our users.
