Inspiration

The inspiration for our project draws from the fact that everyone in our group was a first-year or third-year transfer student. As first years, it can sometimes be tough to find study locations on campus, so we decided to create an application that helps solve this issue.

What it does

Our project allows users to explore an interactive map of many study locations on campus or allows them to view them in list form. When viewing the study locations in list form, users are also able to click on hyperlinks that take them directly to the coordinates of the location in Google Maps.

How we built it

Utilizing React and Expo, we created an IOS App, where we imported many libraries, and created many style containers to make a simple but intuitive user interface for our application. Using hyperlinks, pictures, lists, loops, maps, etc, we were able to achieve a seamless experience for our users and made interactive pieces such as drop-down menus, scrolling, and buttons that allow users to navigate, all of which were programmed with JSX.

Challenges we ran into

As beginners, we ran into issues with GitHub such as branching and pushing our code as most of us have never used GitHub in a collaborative setting. We also had to learn React and Expo on the fly while creating these applications as we ran into a lot of syntax errors and had a difficult time adjusting the style to accommodate iPhone users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to collaborate as a team despite not knowing each other prior and using our limited knowledge of app design to create a working model app on the iPhone. We are especially proud of growing as programmers and learning new tools such as JavaScript and frameworks like React and Expo to make a decent working project. The dedication we showed during the duration of this project was unmatched and gave us a satisfying feeling that we were able to achieve creating a project.

What we learned

We learned quite a lot, from using GitHub and git and the terminal to using React as our framework to create our application. We learned how to style our app using CSS syntax, creating functionality of our interactive pieces using JavaScript, and learning to install and implement libraries to enhance the User Experience.

What's next for Study Finder | Team Scallywags

If we were to improve upon this project, we would allow users to submit their own location recommendations similar to RateMyDorm or RateMyProfessor. We would also work on the design creating more eye-pleasing styles and incorporating more pictures as well. Although this may be the end of the road for Team Scallywags, we can all take away the valuable tools and experience we have obtained during two days at Diamond Hacks and allow us to thrive in our paths.
