Inspiration

It all began approximately 10 days ago from today, which would place the starting point around March 2nd, at 1:00 a.m. While watching a video featuring Leonardo DiCaprio discussing sustainability and climate change, a peculiar insight struck me. I couldn't shake the thought of how our society tends to raise awareness about climate change and renewable resources only after significant damage has already occurred on an immense scale. In response, an immediate idea formed in my mind: the necessity to instill awareness about these critical issues from childhood, fostering a proactive mindset toward mitigating potential harm. And thus, the concept of the SkySlide project was born.

What it does

Rather than reacting to the consequences of our actions, SkySlide strives to cultivate proactive mental models in children from an early age. This proactive attitude toward environmental stewardship not only enhances our quality of life but also fosters the flourishing of nature.

How we built it

I, Prabhat Akhoon, assembled a team of five members, including myself, each tasked with a specific role related to app UI, game logic, state management, database management, and game UI. Despite encountering challenges due to a lack of expertise in this new genre of cross-platform game development, some team members persevered and successfully delivered the required components.

Challenges we ran into

  • The primary challenge we faced throughout this project was the constraint of time. As mentioned earlier, the idea emerged late, despite having seen the Global Gamers Challenge post previously. The initial days of development were dedicated to grasping the intricacies of the Flame engine. However, as we delved deeper, another hurdle emerged: understanding and implementing game physics using Flame Forge2D, a tool none of us had prior experience with.
  • The first day was marked by disbelief and doubt regarding the feasibility of the task. Over the next two days, we cautiously explored possibilities. By the fourth day, we came to terms with the complexity of the application. The remaining six days were spent tirelessly working to bring the app to life, grinding through challenges and pushing boundaries to meet our goals.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We achieved two significant accomplishments with this project. Firstly, we successfully completed it within the allotted time frame, despite facing numerous challenges along the way. Secondly, in a world where it's often difficult to find opportunities to be genuinely helpful, we take pride in the contribution we're making to our community. While we understand that our efforts may or may not spark immediate change, we're proud to have taken the initiative and made a positive contribution, aiming to inspire others to do the same.

What we learned

The most crucial lesson we learned from this project was the importance of communication and discipline. Initially, there was a lack of effective communication among team members, resulting in disorganization and setbacks in the project's progress. However, once we recognized this issue and implemented structured and organized communication processes, such as regular meetings and updates, we witnessed a significant improvement in the project's development pace and overall success. This experience underscored the vital role that clear and consistent communication plays in ensuring project cohesion and efficiency.

What's next for SkySlide

  • SkySlide seeks to integrate educational content such as quizzes and guides aimed at younger audiences.
  • To cater to the adult community, our vision is to expand the game into a multiplayer, cross-platform project. This feature will allow players to access leaderboards, showcasing the most environmentally conscious individuals in the community.
  • The trash collected by users within the application will serve a dual purpose: they can either be recycled or used to purchase new vehicle parts. This feature will create a garage-like aspect within the application, enhancing user engagement and customization options.
  • Improving the terrain theme by adding renewable energy specific illustrations and educational content in the background.
