Inspiration
One of our members was a mentor in a Business program and worked on a presentation advocating for change in California to aid Homeless people. This sparked our idea to create ShelterGuide.
What it does
ShelterGuide utilizes technology and innovative algorithms to connect the homeless with the nearest shelters! With a tap, they can access the assistance they require.
How we built it
We created the ShelterGuide website with HTML/CSS and utilized a JavaScript backend to develop the algorithms that guide homeless people to shelters in the downtown San Diego area. The project is scalable and we plan to develop it further in the future.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into challenges when it came to tying in our backend with our frontend. However, we were able to learn how to implement complex algorithms into our frontend development.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to create a project with a meaningful goal. This was a very enriching project and we are glad we were able to implement our knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and backend development.
What we learned
We learned how to create a meaningful change with full-stack development.
What's next for ShelterGuide
ShelterGuide is scalable and we plan to web scrape in the future to expand our databases and homeless people through all of the United States.
