Inspiration

We were driven by the persistent issue of potholes causing vehicle crashes, particularly in regions like Michigan. The lack of a real-time, accurate detection system inspired us to create Roadi, a solution that not only identifies these road hazards but also helps prevent potential accidents.

What it does

Roadi uses advanced accelerometer and ARM technology to detect potholes accurately and in real-time.Roadi records the current position of the detected pothole using a GPS API and is stored in a database which is send to a construction company. It goes beyond detection by integrating with MATLAB, enabling in-depth data analysis and plotting, focusing primarily on pothole-related vehicle crashes.

How we built it

Roadi was built by integrating cutting-edge accelerometer sensors with ARM processing units. We utilized MATLAB for data analysis and visualization, ensuring a comprehensive approach to detecting and analyzing road conditions.

Challenges we ran into

A core challenge was getting accurate pothole detection. Fine-tuning the accelerometer's sensitivity for accurate data capture and processing was a significant task. Furthermore, mastering Firebase Cloud Messaging integration added a layer of complexity since we have to use google home to get voice verification. Additionally, leveraging AppDesigner on MATLAB for plotting intricate graphs and effectively utilizing various sliders and components presented an engaging learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although achieving perfect data from the accelerometer proved challenging, we managed to obtain nearly accurate results, a feat we take great pride in. Our accomplishments extended to successfully reading sensor data via Python, sending notifications to an Android phone for pothole confirmation, and simultaneously processing multiple files to generate insightful plots.

What we learned

We gained valuable skills in utilizing Google Cloud Console and I2C protocols, mastering data masking and filtering techniques with binary values from our sensor to detect potholes. We also successfully navigated the complexities of AppDesigner.

What's next for Roadi

Integrating this technology into modern vehicles aims to enhance road safety and provide a superior driving solution, effectively reducing hazardous driving conditions.
