Inspiration

The big theme of this Hackathon is "Patient Safety" and creating a project that can help healthcare providers systems that help patients maintain good health during and after receiving care. While medical professionals are well equipped to ensure that their patient is doing well during a visit, there are often conflicts when trying to help patients recover afterwards. Whether the patient is unable to keep track of their prescriptions, or the medical professional is not available, our team recognized that we needed to address this.

That is why we decided to automate it.

What it does

Our app, PillFill, activates an alarm on a patients phone to remind them to take their medication. But, the only way for the patient to get rid of the alarm is to take a picture of their medications, with the proper doses. If it is the incorrect med or dose, the alarm will continue. The AI software will automatically detect this.

The medical profession would log the patient information on a list and their prescription information to start this process.

How we built it

Developed a mobile app through xcode that utilizes multiple forms of information verification systems that depend on automated data transfers and a trained machine learning model in order to create an effective alert system.

Challenges we ran into

Working under the time constraint prevented our team from effectively developing each subsystem to our expectations. Balancing the development of an interactive mobile app, the development of a website, training a machine learning model, and creating a slick design became more difficult to do as we advanced through the Hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Members of our group were initially unfamiliar and intimidated by the idea of incorporating the AI and ML into our project, as none of us had worked with these types of models before. However, we were able to integrate these advanced systems into our project in an innovative manner. Also, most group members had no background in web development, yet we were able to learn React to develop a website to accompany our main project.

What we learned

The progress in the first 22 hours is the same as the last 2 hours in a hackathon.

What's next for PillFill

Expand and innovate not only the social networking between patients and medical professors, but to integrate healthcare providers in the system. Also, to improve the communication system.
