Inspiration

As the elderly population grows, so does the prevalence of memory-related issues and Alzheimer's disease. Current solutions often fail to provide adequate support and early detection, leaving caregivers and individuals vulnerable to overlooked signs and safety risks.

What it does

Our website records voice memos, which are then used for memory quizzes. The data obtained from these quizzes serve as a tool for early detection of Alzheimer's in patients. While the voice memo recordings are beneficial for individuals with a family history of Alzheimer's, they also provide a necessary tool for the aging population in America. However, the voice memo recording feature is not solely aimed for early detection but also aids those already diagnosed with Alzheimer's, assisting them in recalling bits and pieces of their memory through saved recordings.

Another essential feature of our website focuses on safety: location access. This feature allows caregivers to monitor the real-time location of their patients and receive message alerts when they leave designated safety zones. These alerts will be send to caregivers via phone number. Our program with location access not only alerts caregivers when their patient strays from safe areas but can also easily summon transportation like Uber by sending the patient's coordinates.

Finally, our website also provides helpful resources for both caregivers and those with Alzheimer's. The resources provide emotional and financial guidance for those affected.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

Coming up with a solution for integrating the voice recorder into our website was a challenge we had to overcome. Initially, our strategy involved utilizing a speech-to-text API or service to transcribe the recordings. Upon consulting with a HackKU mentor, we realized that this process would consume too much time, prompting us to explore alternative methods to implement our idea. Currently, our project enables users to record voice memos. However, in the future, we would like to add functionality that generates a quiz based on the recorded voice memos. Then, when a user has consistently been getting questions wrong, it can serve as an indication that their memory is deteriorating.

What we learned

What's next for MemoryMate

The next steps for MemoryMate could involve further refining and expanding its features to better serve its target users. One example of this is enhancing the memory quiz functionality by refining algorithms and incorporating machine learning to better detect patterns of Alzheimer's. Another option is community building and support within MemoryMate, where caregivers, patients, and healthcare professionals can connect, share experiences, and offer support.
