Inspiration
We heard about the devastating stories from the recent Taiwan earthquake and other humanitarian disasters and wanted to do our part in helping mitigate such misfortunes in the future.
What it does
HOT Maps is a game and assessment of users online mapping skills, measuring their performance with our custom evaluation metric.
How we built it
We used the OpenStreetMap dI editor's framework, and added on a mandatory stage to the walkthrough.
Challenges we ran into
We were limited to a few methods for posting content to the screen due to the existing codebase, and we had to understand its inner workings to make progress. We also needed to innovate for ways to judge a user's performance, as the codebase had no built in options.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our translation and scaling invariant evaluation metrics are robust and give an accurate sense of the goodness of the mapping.
(and of course, the confetti at the end!)
What we learned
We gained valuable experience in polygon algorithms and adding on to an established Node.js codebase
What's next for HOT Maps
We can extend the game with more stages and challenges, including randomly generating satellite images from around the world to map under a time limit.
