Inspiration
We wanted to make it easier for kids, and people who are less knowledgeable about space to learn about current events in the world of space exploration.
What it does
Articles are scraped from news websites and then ran multiple times through Google's Gemini LLM to produce 3 different versions aimed at primary students.
How we built it
Uses React TypeScript with Vite, Django, puppeteer & cheerio for JS and postgreSQL
Challenges we ran into
Gemini: Writing good prompts with consistent responses is challenging Project Management: We ran into many git merge issues due to a lack of foresight regarding project structure. Remote Database: We could only access the remote database hosted with neon.tech with a VPN as eduroam did not allow the connection. Virtual Environments: Just didn't do as it was asked :(
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It works, completely unexpected, quite the curveball. On a serious note, to have a functional site after only 24 hours is a significant achievement for a group this clueless. We used quite a range of technologies, and with more tech comes more troubleshooting, overcoming that was no small feat, but we managed it.
What we learned
Each of us brought a different set of skills and knowledge of frameworks to the project. However, we did not just stick to what we knew and shared experiences between ourselves and all stepped outside our comfort zones. We also learnt the importance of proper planning, because we didn't, and it came back to bite us.
What's next for Galaxy Tales
The idea behind the project could be applied to not only other sectors of science journalism, but the communication of news and knowledge online at large.
