Inspiration

We were inspired by our excitement to work out with our parents and support them on their fitness journeys. While we were home, we were able to provide guidance on workouts and do exercises together, but now that we are away for college it has been much more difficult to offer feedback and send encouragement. We wanted to create an app that would bring our families together through our shared goal of wellness and fitness.

What it does

Fitlial provides a space to design workouts for parents and family and to comment and react to each other's workout videos. The workouts are displayed daily with a demo created by one family member, and each member of the family group uploads videos of each exercise they perform. When the videos are submitted, the rest of the family can view and comment on their video. The calendar feature indicates how many members of the family completed that day's workout.

How we built it

The app was built on React with Node.js and Express. Frontend elements were built using HTML, CSS, and Javascript after drawing out designs. Backend was built using node and the endpoints for uploading videos were connected to the React components.

Challenges we ran into

Being a two-person team, we had to cover much more ground and organize our time efficiently. We split into frontend and backend roles but would have appreciated more support on both ends. However, we put in a great effort to finish this working product and look forward to building out the rest of the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are really excited to showcase our initial version of Fitlial - our shared effort and collaboration led to a fun and productive weekend, and we really value the time we spent brainstorming, drawing, and hacking away.

What we learned

We applied knowledge learned from classes such as Scalable Software & Web Development, and we were able to put into practice Agile team methods and Git workflow. We also learned that a lot can happen in 24 hours and that we can build a project from the ground up!

What's next for Fitlial

We hope to build out user profiles and having our videos saved to a database for easier access and greater storage.
