Inspiration
The theme was accessibility. And that's really where the idea sparked into our heads. We know from previous experiences that there underprivileged communities who simply don't have access to tools that help them succeed with financial literacy. In fact, it's proven that most Americans are actually in debt and have less than $10,000 in savings. Because of this, it's nearly impossible for so many Americans to retire.
Many Americans don't want to live like this, but simply lack to tools to succeed. We made those tools.
What it does
FinLit attempts to challenge the aforementioned issue using a unique approach. We teach financial literacy to underprivileged communities.
We strongly believe that financial literacy is right, and yet it's not accessible to those who need it the most. We set out to change that
We use Gamified lessons to teach how to manage financials to these underprivileged communities. We teach budgeting, taxes, and how to manage your finances. We even talk about when to use credit cards and when to use debit cards. This way we can teach finances to those who genuinely need it.
How we built it
Here's our Tech Stack
Design:
- Figma
- Canva
Backend
- Flask
- HuggingFace
Frontend
- Svelte Kit
- ShadCn UI
Validation/testing
- Postman
- VS code live share
Communication:
- iMessage
- Discord
We worked hard to perfect this tech stack
Challenges we ran into
Shlok - This was my first time working with the HuggingFace API, as well as coding really serious flask projects. I also didn't know how to use Postman Prior. I also got much better at figma. I learned a lot from this
Dhruv - This was my first time working with SvelteKit, and Svelte in general. I normally worked with html/css, and was mostly a backend developer prior. I worked really hard on learning new frameworks as I worked
Neel - I developed the JS game. I'd never really worked with JS this heavily, and was pretty new to how to pie chats worked. I learned as I coded, and made a product I'm proud of
Raima - I worked on the lessons, and was in charge of managing everything. This was my first time using canva for website development, and I learned a lot about website formatting.
Netra - This was my first time doing a hackathon. I learned a lot of website development skills in Svelte, as well how to use Figma, and how to format website UX
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We all learned many new skills and developed a product that we're all proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to work well in a team, as well as each learning a handful of new skills.
What's next for FinLit
We plan to release FinLit as an open-source project under the MIT license, inviting others to contribute and improve upon our work to benefit our community.
