Inspiration
Upon evaluation of the modern education system, one flaw strikes clear: budgeting and financing. Every member of society must learn the basics of personal financial literacy such as loans, budgeting, saving, etc. However, the standard high school never builds a sufficient curriculum to tackle this issue. This game aims to solve this problem in a fun gameplay environment to incentivize learning how to manage money in hopes of a long and fulfilling future.
What it does
Budget Delivery is an Apple delivery game that teaches users the basics of personal finance. The user takes out a loan, deposits into savings, and deals with financial emergencies, all while playing an apple-collecting minigame and delivering apples to customer's buildings and a car. The user learns to maximize profits and savings while also learning about interest and the importance of having an emergency fund.
How we built it
We built the game using Canva for the designs and Godot for the programming. We chose these methods as they were simpler and allowed us versatility for the short time frame that we were working under. In Godot, we used GDScript to connect the buttons and internal processes of the gameplay.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a large problem when merging the parts of the projects that we worked on. Because we worked on the portions individually and Godot did not have a live share feature, it made merging the work that we had done together in the end extremely difficult. We have learned in the future that we should more clearly divide the tasks so that overlap would not occur.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the work that we put into creating the game's graphics. We carefully handmade each graphic using basic shapes in Canva. This gave us complete creative control over the visuals of the game giving it a more unique and individualized feel. Though this process required more work and dedication, it allowed us to show our creativity and individuality better than premade graphics could.
What we learned
Throughout the process, we learned how to make better games and more about finances. As we are high school students as well, information about money is not taught in our schools. In making this project we had to research and expand our own knowledge about these topics so that we could accurately and concisely present the information to players. We also learned how to collaborate better. We faced some challenges with merging our workflow together, which allowed us to learn valuable lessons about how to divide tasks and communicate.
What's next for Budget Deliver
Next in Budget Deliver, we will implement other financial literacy features such as investing, credit cards, mortgages, and more. As the game has a versatile setup, it is open to be able to add many other areas of personal finance that are basic knowledge needed for young adults, that they are often not taught. We hope to continue improving the game to where it is a well-rounded resource for young adults looking to have a basic overview of money-matters before embarking on adulthood.
