Every year, 7C students rush to buy and sell second-hand appliances, furniture, and more. Where do they go to find these bargain deals? They must venture into the chaos of the 7C For Sale/For Free Facebook page, or frantically spam dorm email chains.
Our project, 7C SecondChance, is the solution - it has the layout of a standard online-shopping website that allows buyers to list their product’s price and category clearly. Users can browse through categories with ease and select their price range. Our solution encourages environmentally sustainable purchasing, and financially supports fellow students!
7C SecondChance extends this market’s financial power and directs it towards pre-existing social good organizations on campus. Buyers can now pledge their profits to organizations - products that have been pledged for donation will be boosted on our website, and organizations that are fundraising will have entire pages devoted to their pledged products! We began this project with Nobody Fails At Scripps/Mudd in mind, who fundraise solely to support low-income students with mutual-aid funding. We will prioritize such organizations, and look forward to expanding to give other clubs the opportunity to fundraise through 7C SecondChance. At every step, we are encouraging sustainability and using our wallet vote towards financially supporting our peers.
We used Figma to protype the website’s layout, coding the front-end in React.js and CSS for the front-end, and used Supabase to authenticate users and manage our databases. We will use a 7C-exclusive log-in system to prevent harm by protecting buyers and sellers from scammers or harassment with the introduction of the reporting feature - if a user gets reported 3 times, they are automatically banned from the website.
This code and structure is easily adaptable for other campuses, and has the ability to reach hundreds of thousands of students, revolutionalizing second-hand shopping and fundraising!
